Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (December 7, 1598 – November 28, 1680) was a Italian sculptor and architect of 17th century Rome, best-known for his marble sculptures the Ecstasy of St Theresa[1] and the Beata Ludovica Albertoni[2].

Update: The Rape of Proserpina, the Ecstasy of St Theresa[1] and the Beata Ludovica Albertoni[2] are Icons of erotic art #35, 36  and 37.

Surely St. Theresa belongs in your Icons of Erotic Art, or is it there already?

Bernini – a REMARKABLE artist! Those who say that craft is not necessary for art [conceptualists], cower before this! Those who think craft is enough [academic epigones in favor with Tom Wolfe etc.] behold the volcanic creativity of his designs!!

Simply fabulous. Thank you for this. I only knew Bernini for his monumental pillars in St Peter’s. I’ll keep my eyes open for more.

I love your succinct analysis of conceptualists vs. academicians.

I have seen this when visiting the Galleria Borghese. took my breath away, as did Apollo and Daphne, my favourite work of art ever.

followed closely by Duchamp’s Etant Donnes
