Icons of erotic art #5

Today I present the 2006 painting Rotterdam by American artist John Currin.

As I’ve explained before, most works of erotic art aren’t really erotic at all in the strictest sense. The strictest sense being that the works actually sexually arouse you. Today’s work is truly erotic. This also and inevitably means that it borders on the pornographic. It is then not a coincidence that this painting is from a series by John Currin based on late 20th century Scandinavian pornographic photos. A good French language analysis is over at lemateurdart.

To each his own… Seems rather clinical to me, a characteristic I associate with porn more than erotic art.

A teacher of mine once said of W.A. Bouguereau that he was a great painter, but a lousy artist. Could this be true of Currin as well? He’s great with paint, but his aesthetic seems to lean heavily towards bad-boy transgression and clever borrowings from the backlog of cultural images.

Of course, to each his own. But I too find this a pretty exciting painting. I wondered if the layout is what makes it so – the woman just waiting for that moment, and the guy about to fulfill it, all positioned most invitingly. If there was ever a come-hither gaze in a painting, that woman’s vagina is providing it! Between the two of them, there is a lot of throbbing and pulsing going on there, and it is pretty easy to want to be right there… I am reminded of the positions in another illustration that I found pretty horny – if it was a photograph it would have been taken about 20 seconds after this picture. It is at http://board.ameanet.org/board/showthread.php?t=870 and worth a look. Again slightly clinical, but beautifully executed I think. I hope you enjoy it. (By the way it is not mine, and I have no interest in providing the link, other than your enjoyment (I hope).)

Just more crap from one of the most disgusting products ever to come out of this patriarchy. Currin is a no talent, overrated sex starved wanker. The success of his work depends on offending ppl by his gross sexism.
