Matalo! (Eng: Kill Him!) is a 1970 western film directed by Cesare Canevari, considered one of the most violent and original spaghetti westerns. Released in France as Matalo and in Germany as Willkommen in der Hölle.
Other unusual westerns include:
- Se sei vivo spara, Giulio Questi, 1967
- Lonesome Cowboys, Andy Warhol, 1968
- Matalo!, Cesare Canevari, 1970
- El Topo, Alejandro Jodorowsky, 1970
- Lust in the Dust, Paul Bartel, 1985
- Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood, 1992
- Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee, 2005
Hmm, not seen this one but I’d recommend El Topo (of course) and the seriously unhinged Se sei vivo spara, aka Django Kill! (although it has nothing to do with the Django series). Features gay cowboys before Andy Warhol and Ang Lee, crucifixion and torture by vampire bat for the hero, and a parrot that comments on the action.
Thanks John, I’ve added your suggestions to the list.
Besides woebot and Giornale, which other good blogs have disappeared?

There’s also been Uncle Zip’s Window (from writer M John Harrison) http://uzwi.wordpress.com/ and The Sharp Side http://ellissharp.blogspot.com/ in the past month.
I left a comment a couple of days ago but I see it’s still in moderation due to the links:

Got it, thanks!

In case you want to see a goo copy of El Topo and The Sacred Mountain, the french/german cultural channel, Arte, is broadcasting both of them these days.
I saw El Topo late at night and was completely stunned by the first part. I’ve recorded Sacred Mountain for future viewing but the snippets I’ve watched are extremely striking.
El Topo is utter craziness, free from all cultural and moral shackles.
PS: and the image quality is gorgeous.
Thanks Georgy,
I never got to see the Sacred Mountain, so I will check.
