David Reinfurt of Dot Dot Dot magazine, http://www.o-r-g.net and Dexter Sinister (http://www.o-r-g.com/) has been doing work on the history of the font used on checks. I believe he’s already published something on it (and the history of the science fiction-y fonts subsequently derived from it), though I’m not sure. He’d certainly know, though.
How stupid of me that I forgot to say that it is indeed from a science fiction novel. (from Counter Clock World by Philip K. Dick to be more precise.) And thanks too that you clarify the obvious thing, that this typeface was first used on checks. I’ve always thought it was a beautiful face. As for the link, I presume you meant http://www.o-r-g.com/
