Érotique du surréalisme (1965|1978) – Robert Benayoun

Robert Benayoun wrote in the tradition of Ado Kyrou, Eric Losfeld, Joseph-Marie Lo Duca and Jean-Pierre Bouyxou, with an absolute disregard for the perceived boundaries between low and high culture. Regarding the publishing house of Eric Losfeld, Éditions Le Terrain Vague, I’ve always wondered if there were German and British equivalents of it. In the United States houses such as Grove Press come to mind, but I know of no equivalents in Germany or the UK.

    There is a german publishing house that comes close to these. The März-Verlag. It was run by Jörg Schröder, who wrote an amazing autobiography (Siegfried). He was also responsible for the “Melzer Verlag” and the german “Olympia Press”. He went broke in the early or middle eighties. One of his current activieties is a blog for the tageszeitung (taz).
    Here are some of the authors he published: Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, Castaneda, Leonard Cohen, Robert Crumb, Fassbinder, John Giorno, Gerhard Malanga, Kenneth Patchen and lots of others. In the Melzer Verlag he was responsible for the first and only german edition of Ballards “Love and Napalm”.
    The books had a very distinctive look – yellow with thick black and red types.
    Like you, I’m very interested in surrealist film criticism and publishers like Losfeld, whose biography I read recently.

    Oh sorry,
    I meant autobiography. “Endetté comme une mule”.
    As I slept over it, there came also a british publisher in my mind who might fit into this category: John Calder. He published Arrabal, Burroughs, Durgnat, Duras, Jodorowsky, Moorcock, Queneau, Pieyre de Mandiargues and Robbe-Grillet. His publishing house seems to be very much the british equivalent to Grove Press. I only own some of his books, but I don’t know much about the history of this publishing house.
    One further detail about Jörg Schröder, he was also the german publisher of “Histoire d’O”, so I think he’s definitely in.
