Blood Simple (1985) Joel and Ethan Coen

Today is Ethan Coen’s fiftieth birthday.

Look out for the scene where the detective opens the window; the woman slams it on top of his wrist and drives a knife through his hand into the windowsill. The original soundtrack is by Carter Burwell, who has done the soundtracks to all of the Coens’ films.

I recall the first time I saw “Blood Simple” and realized these Coen Bros. cats were something new, bringing brains and style to cinema (the latter has been particularly lacking of late). I was utterly blown away by “Miller’s Crossing” and while I don’t think they’ve done anything nearly as good since, I have high hopes for their adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. Thanks, your clip brought back memories. M. Emmet Walsh is one of my all-time favorite character actors…
