RIP David Bordwell (1947-2024)

Making Meaning (1979)

David Bordwell (1947-2024) was een Amerikaans filmtheoreticus en historicus, onder andere auteur van Film Art (1979) een handboek waarmee onderwijzers van filmwetenschappen hun leerlingen leren wat film is.

Hij wordt geassocieerd met een methodologische benadering die bekend staat als formalisme. Het is een benaming die hij zelf niet gezocht heeft maar die hij heeft gekregen vanwege zijn verzet tegen de interpretatieve benaderingen die in de mode waren vanaf de late jaren zestig tot het einde van de twintigste eeuw in magazines als Cahier du cinéma in Frankrijk en Screen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

RIP Gene Youngblood (1942 – 2021)

 Gene Youngblood is an American writer best known for his book Expanded Cinema (1970). The book is a typical product of 1960s counter-cultural utopianism.

Contrary to the usual 1960s utopianism, Youngblood’s utopianism is not focused on politics but on form.

Central to this book is the predicted advent of a new noosphere. Noosphere is a concept coined by Teilhard de Chardin (along with Vladimir Vernadsky).

RIP Peter Wollen (1938 – 2019)

Peter Wollen was a British film theorist, filmmaker. and political journalist.

 Signs and Meaning in the Cinema (1969) . I’m curious about the middle cover.

He is best-known for his book Signs and Meaning in the Cinema (1969) as well as his marriage to and collaboration with Laura “visual pleasure” Mulvey.
