RIP Ellen McIlwaine (1945 – 2021)
Ellen McIlwaine was an American singer-songwriter and musician best known for her career as a solo singer, songwriter and slide guitarist.
I discovered her via Life:Styles – Kenny Dope (2003) which features her “Jimmy Jean” song, originally released on the album We The People (1973). The congas you hear are, as far as I know, by Cándido Camero.
Her song “Can’t Find My Way Home” is reminiscent of “You Goin’ Miss Your Candyman” (1968) is a song by Terry Callier.
RIP Roger Hawkins (1945 – 2021)
Roger Hawkins was an American drummer.
He played drums on countless well-known soul, disco, and r&b songs.
He was a co-founder of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section in Alabama, a house band like the Compass Point All Stars, Booker T. & the M.G.’s and the Salsoul Orchestra.
Hawkins played drums on “Love Sensation” (1980) by Loleatta Holloway.
RIP Franco Battiato (1945 – 2021)
Franco Battiato was an Italian composer, writer, filmmaker, and painter.
His name is on the ‘Nurse with Wound list’ and his compositions are in the ‘Caribou 1000’ and on the ‘Daily Fingertracks’.
His debut albums Fetus (1972) and Pollution (1972) are typical for the beginning of his career. He made these albums when he was 27.
I wrote something here about peak creativity but erased it. Notions such as ‘late bloomer’, ‘child prodigy’, ‘imperial phase’, ‘genius’ and ‘talent’ and artists such as David Bowie, Lee Perry and Goya crossed my thoughts.
Battato was new to me. I enjoyed him immensely yesterday. An old adagium of me comes to mind. Something about looking for beauty in unexpected places.
RIP Wayne Fontana (1945 – 2020)
Wayne Fontana was an English singer best-known as the singer of “The Game of Love” (1965), covered as “Quand tu es là” by Sylvie Vartan that same year.
RIP Sweet Pea Atkinson (1945 – 2020)
Sweet Pea Atkinson was an American singer best known for his vocal contributions to the releases of the band Was (Not Was) (I like their “Wheel Me Out”).
His solo singles include “Dance or Die” (1982) which was played at the Paradise Garage.
RIP Christophe (1945 – 2020)
Christophe was a French singer-songwriter best known for his schmalzy broken heart love song “Aline” (1965).
Apart from that, he gained some fame for his composition “Sunny Road to Salina” (1970), which was featured in Kill Bill Vol. 2. (2004).
RIP Bert “De Zwarte Komedie” Verhoye (1945 – 2019)
Bert Verhoye was a Belgian satirist, Belgium’s one-man Charlie Hebdo.
He was known to the extreme left for ridiculing extreme right ‘heroes’ such as Cyriel Verschaeve and Karel Dillen.
After almost 40 years of left wing mayors in Antwerp, right wing mayor Bart De Wever came to power and Verhoye’s theater De Zwarte Komedie lost its funding.
Verhoye has no successor.
